Admissions Criteria. Admission to the S.J.D. program is highly competitive. In order to be admitted, an applicant must have obtained their previous degree or degrees in law with distinction. The successful applicant will have written the 50-page LL.M. Paper and attained a distinguished academic record in their Harvard Law School LL.M. studies.The JD is a professional doctorate while the PhD is a research doctorate. The JD curriculum is comprised almost exclusively of courses, while the PhD generally has no coursework. The JD prepares one to join a profession while the PhD prepares one to become a professor. So no, two very different programs.

Students are expected to complete the program within two years after meeting the minimum residency requirement and achieving candidacy. When appropriate, a candidate’s faculty supervisor will recommend to the S.J.D.
