Apartments Open to our first-year students, university apartments allow independence and privacy while placing students in the heart of KU’s campus.Battenfeld, home to about 50 men, opened in 1940 as KU's first men's scholarship hall and was updated in 2018. The hall is a gift of Jesse R. Sr. and Margaret Battenfeld to honor their son, John Curry Battenfeld. He was a KU student who was killed in a car accident in December 1939.
