If the rifle has two numbers then subtract that from 100 and the answer is the year made. Your gun certainly must have a Ballard style rifled barrel if it does not have 16 lands and grooves that is found in the Micro-Groove barrel. Most people will tell us there were no checkering options after WWI, but I've seen enough Model 39's that were checkered in what appeared to be factory checkering to debunk that theory. I believe your rifle is factory checkered.

I got the rifle in Sept. 2012 so the 2 probably means 2012. The whole sequence may show what number in the lot mine was built. The whole number is MR2xxxxC. Could be a February, 2012 build.
