For an AR-15 used for hunting and SHTF scenarios i.e battle rifle, I would go LPVO. However, if we employ logic and reason to find that best available tool for the most likely encounter, i think the red dot/magnifier combo would be the best tool for the job. That said, there are plenty of light weight LPVO's. With a light weight mount, you can keep them in the ballpark of a red / dot mangnifier combo.
