Don't know if you can help me, but I upgraded my freighter to 42 slots in main and 12 in tech. The thing is, it says maximum space when I try to apply the cargo bulkhead in the main inventory. I can't upgrade it to 48 slots.The ship value does increase but not nearly as much as you spend to improve their storage.
