98 prairie 400 4x4 shift problems. i picked up 2 prairie's today in trade for an old polaris i had. the one i'm working on first is the a 98 400 4x4 and it won't shift into forward and will go in reverse only and some time's neutral if i'm lucky. i unhooked the linkage from the shifter for hi/low and the forward/neutral/reverse. the hi/lo lever ...Remove the gas tank cover. Then remove the gas tank and you can easily get to the starter. Two bolts and one wire and the starter is ready to pull out and replace with a new one. Thanks for the interest. Full disclosure I usually work on Honda ATV's. But, a buddy of mine bought a 1999 Prairie 400 for "a good deal" on local craigslist. The needle seat has a small screen and it was plugged only letting a small amout of fuel into the bowl. Most of the jets were clear but I still used music wire and air to clear any blockages.
Posted April 4, 2019. Go through the gears and make sure they all work. Double check the fluids, look for welds on the frame for a wreck/repair. The Atv turns on perfectly, but when put on drive and hitting the throttle hard to take off, the quad makes an loud sound (like it's hitting metal) and does not advance.
