This worked for me! I claimed the new ship but didn't have the supplies to get it off the planet. I placed a custom marker at the damaged ship but when I went back to my freighter to get repair supplies the marker glitched out and stopped pointing me back to the ship. Jumping systems made the new ship appear in the landing bay of my freighter.You can exchange for another or scrap a ship. Repairs are not required in either cases. The best trick is to allow the broke ship to arrive automatically on your freighter. Jump in and jump out- go upstairs and use the teleporter to the current station.
